How to compress a PDF
Many upload forms and email providers limit file size, often to 2, 5 or 10 MB. Usually it is embedded photos and scans that make a PDF large. Here you can shrink them right in your browser, without the document ever leaving your device.
- Select a PDF file.
- Choose the level: Balanced for most documents, Strong for tight size limits, For scans for scanned pages.
- Start compressing, check the new size and download the PDF.
Which level should I choose?
“Balanced” reduces large photos to a resolution that stays sharp on screen and in normal printing. “Strong” goes further and helps when a form only allows a few megabytes. “For scans” rebuilds every page as a compressed image and usually saves the most with scanned documents.
What is preserved?
With “Balanced” and “Strong”, text, fonts, links and vector graphics stay unchanged, only the images are saved again. Text therefore remains selectable and searchable. With “For scans”, every page becomes an image, so the text can no longer be selected.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a PDF under 2 MB?
Under “Maximum file size”, choose the limit of your form or email program. Starting from your chosen strength, the tool then tries ever stronger levels until the PDF fits, and the text stays selectable. If that is not enough, choose “For scans”. There the resolution of the pages is also lowered step by step if needed.
Why did my PDF barely get smaller?
PDFs that consist mostly of text are usually small already, so there is little to save. Images that are already heavily compressed can hardly be reduced further either. If the file does not get smaller, you get the original back unchanged.
Are forms and signatures preserved?
With “Balanced” and “Strong”, fillable fields and links are usually kept, while “For scans” removes them. Digital signatures become invalid with any change, so do not compress signed documents.
How large can the PDF be?
Up to 25 MB and 150 pages. Password-protected PDFs are not supported. In that case, open the document in a PDF program and save an unprotected copy.
