How to compress images

Large photos quickly exceed the limits of email attachments, upload forms and websites. Here you can shrink JPG, PNG and WebP images right in your browser and see straight away how much space you save. Your images never leave your device.

  1. Select up to 30 images or drag them into the box.
  2. Keep the format or choose WebP, then set the quality. 80% is a good starting point for photos.
  3. Start the compression, compare before and after, and download the result.

Which quality should I choose?

For photos, 70 to 85% usually gives much smaller files with barely visible differences. Below 60%, edges and color gradients start to look noticeably rough. Check the result in the preview and try a second value if needed. Your originals stay unchanged.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

JPG is made for photos. PNG is lossless and meant for screenshots and graphics with transparency, but it can hardly be made smaller without changing the format. At the same quality, WebP is often much smaller than JPG and is displayed by all current browsers. Some older programs cannot open WebP files, though.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an image under 200 KB?

Under “Maximum file size”, choose a value such as 200 KB or enter a custom size. The tool then finds the highest quality that fits under this limit and only reduces the dimensions if necessary. The limit applies to each image separately. If an image is already below it, it stays unchanged.

Why did my image barely get smaller?

Many images from messaging apps or websites are already heavily compressed. If compressing again would not save anything, the “Same as original” setting gives you back the unchanged file. Choosing WebP or a lower quality usually still makes a difference.

Is metadata such as location and camera details kept?

A newly saved image usually no longer contains EXIF data such as the location or camera model. The photo’s orientation is applied beforehand. Originals that are returned unchanged keep their data.

How large can the images be?

Each file can be up to 25 MB, with 50 MB and 30 files in total per run. An image can have up to 25 megapixels and 16,000 pixels per side. Animated images are not supported yet. Convert iPhone photos in HEIC format with “HEIC to JPG”.
