How to crop images
Profile pictures need a square, presentations the 16:9 landscape format, stories the 9:16 portrait format. Here you draw a frame exactly around the part of the image you want to keep, freely or in a fixed aspect ratio. If needed, rotate the image first.
- Select an image.
- Choose an aspect ratio or “Free” and drag the frame to the right spot. Use the corners to change its size.
- Check the size shown in pixels and save the crop.
Which aspect ratio for what?
1:1 suits profile pictures and many social media posts. 16:9 matches screens, presentations and video thumbnails, 9:16 the portrait format of stories and reels. 4:3 and 3:4 are classic photo formats. With “Same as original” you keep the shape of the photo and only trim the edges.
Precise work with mouse, finger and keyboard
Drag the frame to move it. Change its size at the corners and, with “Free”, at the edges as well. With the keyboard, the arrow keys move the frame and Shift with the arrow keys changes its size. Below the image you always see how large the crop will be in pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move the crop area freely?
Yes. Simply drag the frame to where you want it. With a fixed aspect ratio the shape stays the same when you enlarge or shrink it; with “Free” you set width and height independently.
Can I just rotate a photo?
Yes. Rotate the image with “Rotate 90°” until it is upright and, with “Free”, let the frame cover the whole image. “Maximize crop area” resets it to full size at any time.
Which format is it saved in?
You can choose JPG, PNG or WebP. JPG is the most widely used format for photos, while PNG and WebP keep transparent areas.
What happens to the parts that are cut off?
The result only contains the selected crop. Your original stays unchanged on your device, so you can always crop again.
